This is a 19th century Victorian pattern. The directions are the original ones (I abbreviated where I could) and are quite different -as you will notice- from today's "modern" abbreviated instructions.

Medallion: 6" diameter. I used a crochet hook size 7 & crochet thread size 10.

Begin with 4 chain, join round; work 8 dc in the circle, and join neatly round.
nd round - 1 dc on 1st stitch of last round, 3 chain, *1 dc on next, 3 chain, and repeat from *, making 8 loops of chain in the round.
rd round - 1 dc, 3 trc, 1 dc, under each loop of 3 chain.
th round - 1 dc at the back between the 2 dc of last round, 4 chain, and repeat.
th round - 1 dc, 4 trc, 1 dc, under each loop of 4 chain.
th round - 1 dc at the back between the 2 dc of last round, 5 chain, and repeat.
th round - 1 dc, 5 trc, 1 dc under each loop of 5 chain.
th round - 1 dc at the back, 6 chain, and repeat.
th round - 1 dc, 6 trc, 1 dc, under each loop of 6 chain.
th round - 1 dc at the back of 7 chain, and repeat.
th round - 2 slip stitches along the loop of 7 chain, 3 chain to stand for a trc, 1 trc under the loop, 3 chain, 2 more trc in the same place, 3 chain, * 2 trc under the next loop, 3 chain, 2 more trc in the same place, 3 chain, and repeat from *.
th round - Slip stitch into the 1st loop of last round, 5 chain, 1 trc in the same loop, 5 chain, 1 trc, 3 chain, 1 trc, all in the same loop, 2 chain, 1 dc under the next loop, * 2 chain, 1 trc under the next loop, 3 chain, 1 trc, 5 chain, 1 trc, 3 chain, 1 trc, all in the same place, 2 chain, 1 dc under the next loop, 2 chain, and repeat from *, and at the end of the round, join into the 3rd stitch of the chain, and fasten off.
th round - 1 dc under any loop of 5 chain, 13 chain, * 1 dc under next loop of 5 chain, 13 chain, and repeat from *.
th round - Double crochet on each stitch of last round.
th round - 1 dc on the stitch over dc of the 13th round, 9 chain, miss 6, 1 dc on the next, 9 chain, and repeat.
th round - dc on each stitch of last round excepting in the centre stitch of chain where put 2 dc, join evenly, and fasten off.
th round - 2 trc in the 1st of the 2 increased stitches of last round, 3 chain, 2 trc in the next stitch, 5 chain, and repeat.
th round - 1 trc, 3 chain, 1 trc, 5 chain, 1 trc, 3 chain, 1 trc, all under the 3 chain loop of last round, 2 chain, 1 dc under the 5 chain loop, 2 chain, and repeat.

This complete the rose medallion. Twenty medallions will make a fair size antimacassar; they are united by a stitch of single crochet worked (after doing 2 of the 5 chain stitches) into the corresponding 5 chain of another medallion. The small rose which fills the vacant space between 4 large roses is made by working as far as the 12th round, in process of which join to the surrounding loops of 5 chain of the large roses.
